Not a lot going for this book. The author spends a lot of time explaining what broken and lost people some of his former comrades in arms are (most of this is described in other books by the people involved), and that war wrecks peoples lives so perhaps they need professional help. Not exactly news to anyone, one might think.

I absolutly love this book! It had everything you could ask for and i couldn't put it down .I have read some of Cecelia's other books, and had high expectations for this one also. It didnt let me down! I must admit i think this is one of her best books, it is such an easy read. I recomend this to everyone even if you haven't read any of Ceclia's books, start with this one!

This is the best book I've read in a very, very long time. Brand's conversational style peppered with hilarious insight and humour is phenomenal. He holds the narrative well throughout, and unlike other autobiographies, he manages to tell the story of his life without that boring "and then this happened, and then that happened and then this happened" rhythym. He seamlessly weaves in and out of his memories and anecdotes, without leaving the reader in a state of confusion.

I have read a few online articles where the reviewers have thought he came across as arrogant and narcissistic, but truly when you read this book you realise that he is actually quite sensitive and insecure in himself.

I have been disappointed by the closing chapters of most of the autobiographies I have read - they often have a feeling of being unfinished. This book isn't one of those. The last paragraph is poignant, and leaves you feeling like this part of Brand's life is closed. I felt shivers up my spine when I read the last sentence, and was sad to have finished - and that's when I know I've just read a great book.

Alan is back on form with this wonderful novel. I found his last one (Love and Dr Devon) a bit naff (sorry Alan), but "Folly" was really lovely. Found it very hard to put down and I love happy endings. Can't wait for the next one!

"Frugal Food" was the first cookbook that I bought. That was 25 years ago (at least). Since then, my (much-used) paperback copy has fallen apart and gone to the great recycling plant in the sky.

It's good, then, to find, not only a new edition, but one that's been updated to take account of changes in what we eat and how we cook. Lard and dripping have been replaced by ground nut oil and you don't even have to make your own pastry - frozen is fine. Good, too, that this has been issued as a hardback: paperback cookery books were never a good idea.

The recipes are basically the same as before - good food made from readily available ingredients that won't break the bank - simple enough for students, ordinary enough for the family and good enough to serve to friends.

Although the emphasis is on economy, there's more than a hint of comfort food here that will not go amiss as the recession deepens and the thermometer falls. Beef in cider - yum - I can hardly wait.

My kids - aged 2 and 4 - love the original Gruffalo story and ask to read it almost every bedtime. There was initial excitement when I brought this one home. But after a couple of readings they quickly stopped asking for it. If I suggest reading it now, they say "no, we want the first Gruffalo story".

In truth, the original Gruffalo story is so good that it's a very, very tough act to follow. But, even allowing for that, this sequel almost entirely lacks most of the features that make the first story so memorable. It hasn't got anything like the same rhythm in the writing. And the plot meanders its way to a weak pay-off that has little impact and doesn't make much sense.

All-in-all, a disappointing follow-up to the excellent original.

this is just he cutest gift for budding little dress designers - and the not so little ones too. I bought this for my goddaughter recently and had to buy another one for myself! it is a delight - perfect for handmade cards etc - hours of fun.
